CASCADE TECHNOLOGIES LAND TOP BUSINESS AWARD

Cascade Technologies

The Stirling-based spin-out company was recognised at the prestigious awards ceremony held at Glasgow Hilton Hotel on June 13.

Cascade has demonstrated and patented the world first real-time technology for the monitoring of gas, emissions and explosives based on the use of Mid Infrared Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs).

The company has established a centre of excellence in QC laser application and is now offering solutions to real world problems in global warming and Homeland Security.

The innovative technology offers a truly cost-effective way of emissions monitoring and can be applied to the marine, petrochemical and refining, power generation, manufacturing and process industries which are now subject to increasing regulatory controls.

The technology is low maintenance, requiring little or no calibration and is now being deployed in harsh environments to measure a range of combustion gases including SOx and NOx. Custom products can be created for industries facing challenging measurement and detection issues.

Cascade's versatile system also offers Homeland Security solutions by its ability to rapidly screen individuals, objects and critical infrastructures. Applications include explosive, chemical agents, toxic industrial chemicals and narcotics detection as well as container screening.

In the past year the company has secured a further £2.5million investment and joined forces with BP to develop an emissions monitoring system for use in the marine industry. This activity has been backed by strategic licensing and supply agreements which has allowed Cascade to break price and performance barriers and release a new generation of compact, affordable and high-performance laser systems.

Business development director Richard Cooper welcomed the award and believes the company has created a strong platform for future growth.

He said: We have developed a depth of experience and established a centre of excellence in Mid IR and QC laser application which can offer cost-effective solutions to real world problems like global warming and Homeland Security.

Our technology already has a global presence through commercial agreements with a number of multi-national organisations and as we enter an era where environmental emissions controls and security are taking-on even greater significance, we believe our technology can be at the forefront of future development.

We have also developed strategic agreements with global suppliers which have allowed us to drive major technology developments through improved component yield, reproducibility, quality and reduced lead-time.

This will allow us to develop our business interests and secure further commercial agreements that will significantly add to the value of our business going forward.
